Does pressure washing damage block paving?
It's a fair worry, and we hear it most weeks: "Won't a pressure washer wreck my block paving?"
The honest answer is no — not when it's done properly. But there's an important second half to that sentence, and it's the bit cheap or rushed jobs skip.
The cleaning isn't the problem — the joints are
Block paving is tough. The blocks themselves shrug off pressure washing without trouble. What pressure washing does do is blast out the kiln-dried sand that sits in the joints between the blocks.
That sand isn't just cosmetic. It locks the blocks together and stops them shifting. Clean a block driveway and leave the joints empty, and over the following months you get:
- blocks that rock and sink unevenly,
- weeds and moss growing straight back into the open joints,
- and a driveway that ages far faster than it should.
So the cleaning is only half the job. Re-sanding is the other half.
How it should be done
- Deep clean the whole surface to lift moss, weeds, algae and oily grime.
- Let it dry so fresh sand will flow into the joints.
- Brush in new kiln-dried sand, working it down into every joint.
- Settle it so the blocks are locked tight again — firm underfoot, weeds shut out.
Skip step 3 and 4 and you've got a clean driveway today and a loose, weedy one by next spring.
What about old or sunken paving?
If blocks are already cracked, sunken or lifting, cleaning will make those issues more obvious — but it won't cause them. Often a clean and re-sand is enough to firm everything back up. Where blocks have genuinely failed, they may need re-laying, and we'll tell you straight if that's the case.
The takeaway
Pressure washing a block driveway is completely safe when the joints are re-sanded afterwards. If you're getting a quote, that's the question to ask: "Does the price include re-sanding?" With us, it always does.

Frequently asked questions
Does pressure washing damage block paving?
No — the blocks themselves are tough. The risk is washing out the kiln-dried sand in the joints, so the fix is to re-sand afterwards. Cleaning without re-sanding is what leaves a driveway loose.
Do you need to re-sand block paving after pressure washing?
Yes. Fresh kiln-dried sand brushed into the joints locks the blocks together and keeps weeds out. Skip it and the blocks can shift and weeds return quickly.
How often should you clean a block paving driveway?
For most homes every two to three years keeps it looking good. Shaded or north-facing drives that green up fast may benefit from a clean more often.
