Getting your driveway ready to sell your house
First impressions happen before a buyer even reaches your front door. Getting your driveway ready to sell your house is one of the most cost-effective things you can do before you go to market — and in our experience, it's one of the most overlooked.
A stained, mossy or weed-riddled driveway signals neglect. A clean, well-kept one signals a house that's been looked after. Estate agents talk about kerb appeal for a reason: it shapes everything a buyer feels as they walk up to view your home.
Why the driveway matters more than you might think
Buyers form an opinion in seconds. If they arrive and see green algae streaking the block paving, oil stains by the garage door, and weeds pushing up through every joint, they're already mentally lowering their offer before they've stepped inside.
You don't need a new driveway. In most cases you just need a proper clean and, in some situations, a fresh sand and seal. The transformation can be dramatic — and the cost is a fraction of what a bad first impression might knock off your asking price.
What a driveway clean actually involves
A professional pressure wash is the foundation of any pre-sale driveway prep. It removes:
- Green algae and black algae — the streaky, slippery discolouration that builds up over time
- Oil and fuel stains from years of parking
- Moss and lichen rooted into the surface
- Dirt, mud and leaf stain ground into the joints and surface
- Weeds growing up through paving joints
For block paving, the process usually involves a rotary surface cleaner that cleans evenly without damaging the blocks, followed by re-sanding the joints with kiln-dried sand and — if you want lasting results — a professional sealant.
For tarmac, concrete and resin-bound driveways, the approach is similar but the aftercare differs. We adjust our method to the surface, not the other way around.
You can read more about the range of surfaces we work with on our driveway cleaning topic hub.
Should you seal the driveway before selling?
Sealing is worth considering for block paving in particular. A freshly sealed driveway looks noticeably sharper — the colours are more vivid, the surface has a subtle sheen, and it's clearly been maintained. For buyers, that's reassuring.
The practical benefits (weed suppression, stain resistance, joint stability) matter less in this context because you're selling, not staying. But the visual impact is real, and it can be worth the extra investment if the driveway is the first thing buyers see.
For other surface types — tarmac, concrete, resin — sealing is less common and usually not necessary before a sale. A thorough clean is typically enough.
What about oil stains and stubborn marks?
Oil stains are one of the most common concerns we hear from sellers. The good news is that most old oil stains respond well to specialist pre-treatment before pressure washing. Very old, deeply embedded stains may lighten rather than disappear completely, but even that's a significant improvement.
If you've got a prominent stain near the front of the drive — right where buyers will park — it's worth flagging it to us when you book so we can allow time for proper pre-treatment.
What about cracks and damage?
Pressure washing won't hide structural problems, and it's not meant to. If there are sunken blocks, cracked concrete or failing edges, those are worth addressing separately before the clean — or at least being upfront with buyers about. A clean surface actually makes it easier to see what's there, which is another reason to sort things early.
How far in advance should you book?
Ideally, book your driveway clean two to four weeks before your property goes live on the property portals. That gives time for:
- The clean to be completed thoroughly, with any pre-treatment soaking in properly
- Re-sanding and sealing to cure fully (sealed block paving needs at least 24–48 hours before vehicles drive on it)
- The surface to settle and look its best before photography
Estate agent photography is the real deadline. Those photos are what most buyers see first, and a great driveway photograph genuinely helps.

A quick checklist before you go to market
- Book a professional driveway clean — don't rely on a borrowed pressure washer and an hour on a Saturday morning
- Ask about pre-treatment if you have oil stains or heavy lichen
- Consider sealing if the driveway is block paving and currently looking dull
- Time it right — aim for clean and dry before photography day
- Don't forget the path to the front door — if it's green or grimy, clean that too
If the path or patio around the back is also part of what buyers will see on a viewing, it's worth including those in the same job. A consistent, well-kept look throughout makes a difference.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to get a driveway cleaned before selling a house?
Most residential driveways in Lincolnshire cost between £100 and £300 to clean professionally, depending on size, surface type and condition. Adding sealing will increase the price but often improves the visual result significantly.
Will pressure washing remove old oil stains from my driveway?
Many oil stains respond well to specialist pre-treatment followed by pressure washing. Very old or deeply set stains may lighten rather than disappear entirely, but the improvement is usually noticeable — worth doing before viewings.
How long before my house goes on the market should I get the driveway cleaned?
Aim for two to four weeks before your estate agent photographs the property. This allows time for cleaning, re-sanding, sealing (if needed) and full curing before the driveway needs to look its absolute best.
Is it worth sealing block paving before selling a house?
For block paving, sealing adds a visible freshness and vibrancy that photographs well and reassures buyers the surface has been maintained. It's not essential, but it's often worth the modest extra cost for the first-impression impact.
